History & Heritage
You’ll find parts of New Zealand’s history throughout Russell and The Duke is no exception. Established in 1827 and proudly holding the country’s first liquor licence in 1840, it’s a beloved icon. Since 2010, Anton and Bridget Haagh, Riki Kinnaird and Jayne Shirley have been its custodians keeping the spirit alive for generations to come.

Since 2016, our collaboration with celebrated Northland artist Lester Hall has brought bold, beautiful artwork to life throughout the hotel. What began at Charlotte’s Kitchen has grown into something unforgettable, stitched into the fabric of The Duke itself.
